Tai Chi (taichichuan/taijiquan) is a system of exercise rooted in martial arts principles and practice. It is usually performed slowly and repetitively, with regular practice leading to benefits in leg and core strength, balance and posture, co-ordination and reflexes, calmness and focus, and mind-body integration. It can also be used to rehabilitate injuries, improve sporting performance and recover from trauma.
I teach the Yang Style Large Frame Long Form version of Tai Chi, though I have some experience with the Beijing 24 (Simplified Tai Chi) and the Wu Style. The majority of my training over the last 15 years has been under the auspices of Les Stacpoole, a decades-long practitioner, and the head student of the renowned Dr Chen Fa, one of Melbourne’s earliest Tai Chi teachers. I have found Tai Chi to be suitable for almost everyone, and it can provide a great alternative when vigorous exercise becomes inappropriate, or when tackling a sedentary lifestyle. For those without any major existing health issues, it can be a great tool for developing mindfulness, adaptability, and resilience, all great tools for health maintenance and self-development. I teach several group classes around Melbourne, though my current focus is on private tuition, as this provides the best opportunity to customise training for the individual.
